A Brick Wall
The only sound you hear when talking to a brick wall is your own. Any wonder people on the other side of the wall won't hear each other? To listen, you first must hear them. To understand them, you first must hear them. Discussion only happens when both have their minds open to listen and then understand. Otherwise, it's just the wind talking past each other, through an invisible brick wall.
